The Course
The CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN (CPT) TRAINING PROGRAM consists of two segments: a classroom segment and a clinical externship.
The classroom segment consists of 60 hours of both lectures and practical instruction delivered in a classroom setting, designed to provide a theoretical foundation and hands-on training in venipuncture and skin puncture procedures. Lectures include basic anatomy and physiology with emphasis on the circulatory system, introduction to specimen collection, risk factors and complications, quality assurance in specimen collection as well as professional behavior and responsibilities in patient care settings.
Upon successful completion of the classroom segment, and after passing the national certification exam, the student is assigned to a Clinical Externship at a local hospital or clinic consisting of at least 40 hours. This course is required for licensure in the State of California as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 (CPT1).

What do Phlebotomists do?
Phlebotomy Technicians work directly with patients; they are the human face of the laboratory. Reference laboratories, hospitals, blood banks, and many physician offices depend on the phlebotomist to collect, process and transport quality samples from the patient to produce accurate laboratory results.
It is a challenging position that requires high responsibility. Phlebotomists must be accurate, work effectively under pressure, and communicate well. Additionally, it is important for the phlebotomist to create a feeling of trust and confidence while drawing specimens from the patient in a skillful and safe manner. The phlebotomy technicians set high standards for themselves and are deeply committed to quality health care.
