Medical Insurance Billers and Coders are important members of the medical office team. Their vast knowledge, flexibility, and skill comes into play each time a patient is seen by a provider, a claim is coded, billed, and processed. Medical billers usually work away from the public eye in the claims processing office, or in the billing department of a medical office, clinic or hospital. Many well trained and experienced billers set up their own home-based businesses.
Job OutlookAccording to the U.S Department of Labor, 10 of the 20 fastest-growing occupations are in Healthcare Services. The Obama administration is investing billions of dollars into modernizing the nation's Healthcare system. A top priority will be transferring antiquated paper medical records to electronic files. Jobs that stand to gain include: Medical Transcriptionists, Medical Records Technicians, Medical Billers and Coders etc.
The Course
The program consists of 500 hours of lectures and practical computer skills labs and 120 hours of on-the-job clinical externship.
Students acquire the knowledge necessary to effectively perform the day-to-day tasks associated with medical reimbursement, medical coding and insurance forms processing. They learn to effectively input patient information, run office reports, and process insurance claims using medical software.
In addition students learn the legal and ethical responsibilities of working with patient information, including HIPAA mandates, the rules for maintaining privacy of medical records and protected health information, and the types of consents and disclosures that are required in the medical office environment.
Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the:
- National Certified Insurance & Coding Specialist exam
